What compounding means
An individualized preparation—not a standard retail product
In Canada, pharmacy compounding is professional practice for a specific patient or animal within an appropriate healthcare relationship. It is different from manufacturing a product for general sale.
Why the answer is not automatic
A request may not be appropriate, technically possible or available at this pharmacy. The pharmacist may need to contact the prescriber, recommend a commercially available product, refer the request to another pharmacy or decline to prepare it.
Calling first lets the pharmacy explain which prescription and formulation details are needed for a proper review.
Reasons a prescriber may ask
When a compounded preparation may be considered
These are examples of questions a prescriber and pharmacist may review. They are not a promise that a particular preparation, ingredient or dosage form is available.
Dosage form or strength
A prescriber may request a different strength or dosage form for an identified patient. The pharmacist must confirm whether the prescription and proposed formulation are appropriate and feasible.
Ingredient considerations
Tell the pharmacist about ingredients that may need to be avoided. The pharmacy must verify the full formulation and cannot describe a preparation as “allergen-free” without product-specific evidence.
Commercial availability
Compounding may sometimes be considered when there is a therapeutic need and a suitable commercial product is unavailable. It is not a guaranteed recreation or exact substitute for a discontinued product.

The pharmacy cannot confirm a formula, price or completion time from a general website request. Start with the prescription and enough information for a pharmacist to review it.

Follow the label and the instructions from the prescriber and pharmacist. Ask before changing how a prescribed preparation is used or stored.
For animal patients
Veterinary compounded prescriptions
If a veterinarian has prescribed an individualized medication for an animal, call the pharmacy to ask whether that specific request can be reviewed. Feasibility depends on the drug, species, dose, dosage form, ingredients and current service capacity.
Veterinary prescription drugs require a veterinarian’s prescription. The veterinarian and pharmacist should address questions about the prescribed dose, dosage form and use.
Careful wording matters
Questions about compounded hormone prescriptions?
Some bioidentical hormone products are approved and regulated by Health Canada; compounded preparations are different. HealthLink BC notes there is no good evidence that compounded bioidentical hormones are safer or more effective than Health Canada–approved hormone therapy.
If a prescriber has discussed a compounded hormone prescription, speak with the prescriber and pharmacist about evidence, alternatives, risks and whether the specific prescription can be reviewed.
Do not rely on “natural balance” claims
This page does not describe compounded hormone therapy as natural, safer, better, or able to restore balance, vitality or well-being.
